dowsing rod

Forked branch tool

A dowsing rod is a forked stick or pair of L-shaped wires supposedly used to locate underground water, minerals, or buried objects.

The practitioner holds the rod while walking, and it allegedly dips or crosses when passing over the target.

Despite no scientific evidence for its effectiveness, dowsing remains practiced in some rural areas: The well-digger walked the property with a dowsing rod.
