dowse

Wield forked branch

Dowse means to search for underground water or minerals using a divining rod—a forked stick or pair of rods held loosely that supposedly dip or twitch when passing over hidden sources.

The practice has no scientific basis but persists in folk tradition: The farmer hired someone to dowse for a well site.

Dowse can also mean to drench or douse, though that spelling is less common.
