witching stick

Forked divining branch

A witching stick is a forked branch or rod used in dowsing—the practice of locating underground water, minerals, or other hidden things.

The user holds the two ends while walking; supposedly the stick dips or twitches when passing over the target.

Also called a divining rod or dowsing rod.
