dowser

Forked stick wielder

A dowser is someone who practices dowsing—the folk art of locating underground water, minerals, or other hidden substances using a forked stick, pendulum, or bent rods.

The dowser walks slowly until the instrument supposedly dips or twitches, indicating what lies beneath.

Though scientifically unproven, dowsing persists in rural areas: They hired a dowser to find where to dig the well.
