dowsing

Forked stick searching

Dowsing is the practice of searching for underground water, minerals, or other hidden things using a forked stick or pair of rods that supposedly move when passed over the target.

The dowser holds the instrument and walks until it dips or twitches, indicating where to dig a well or find buried objects.

Despite centuries of use, dowsing has no scientific basis—controlled studies show dowsers perform no better than chance.

Also called water witching or divining.
