depressurisation

Cabin air escaping

Depressurisation is the loss or release of pressure from an enclosed space.

Aircraft cabins maintain pressure at high altitudes, so depressurisation—whether gradual or sudden—poses serious danger: Oxygen masks dropped during the rapid depressurisation.

The term applies to any pressurised system losing its seal.

Also spelled depressurization.
