hull breach

Vessel wall failure

A hull breach is a rupture or hole in the outer shell of a ship, submarine, spacecraft, or aircraft—any vehicle where the hull separates inside from outside.

The term appears most often in science fiction, where a hull breach in space means rapid decompression and mortal danger: We've got a hull breach on deck seven!

In naval contexts, a hull breach can sink a vessel.
