off-gassing
Releasing trapped vapors
Off-gassing is the release of volatile chemicals from materials into the surrounding air, typically at room temperature.
New carpets, furniture, paint, and plastics off-gas compounds that create that "new car smell" or "new house smell." The term appears in discussions of indoor air quality and material safety: Let the mattress off-gas for a few days before sleeping on it.
