safety stop
Diver's ascent break
A safety stop is a brief pause during a scuba diver's ascent, typically at about 15 feet for three to five minutes, allowing dissolved nitrogen to off-gas gradually and reduce the risk of decompression sickness.
Though not mandatory for recreational dives within no-decompression limits, safety stops are standard practice: We made our safety stop at five meters before surfacing.
