freshman
New to campus
A freshman is a first-year student at a high school or college: She's a freshman at UCLA.
The term extends to anyone new to a role or organization: a freshman congressman, a freshman employee.
As an adjective, it describes inexperience or newness: freshman year, freshman mistakes.
The gender-neutral alternative first-year has gained ground in academic settings.
