chambered nautilus
Pearly coiled mollusk
A chambered nautilus is a marine mollusk with a spiral shell divided into gas-filled compartments.
The animal lives in the outermost chamber, using the others for buoyancy control.
Native to the Indo-Pacific, it's considered a living fossil—virtually unchanged for hundreds of millions of years.
The shell's elegant logarithmic spiral makes it an icon of natural geometry.
