counting rhyme

Selection verse recitation

A counting rhyme is a children's verse used to select someone for a role in a game—who's "it" in tag, who hides first in hide-and-seek.

Children point to each player in turn with each syllable or beat until the rhyme ends on someone: Eeny, meeny, miny, moe...

The selected child is either chosen or eliminated, depending on the game's rules.
