turn-taking

Speaking in sequence

Turn-taking is the practice of alternating between speakers in conversation or participants in an activity.

In linguistics, it describes how people naturally know when to speak and when to listen: The children struggled with turn-taking during group discussions.

The concept applies beyond speech to games, shared resources, or any situation requiring orderly exchange: Turn-taking at the swing set kept fights to a minimum.
