monster under bed
Imaginary bedroom lurker
A monster under the bed is the imaginary creature children fear lurks beneath them as they sleep.
The phrase captures a universal childhood anxiety—the dark space just out of sight becoming a hiding place for something threatening.
Adults use it figuratively for irrational fears or anxieties that seem silly in daylight: Student debt is the monster under the bed for an entire generation.
