silent reading
Eyes-only text absorption
Silent reading is reading without vocalizing the words—taking in text through the eyes alone, without moving the lips or producing sound.
This is the default mode for most adult readers today, though historically, reading aloud was the norm.
The library was filled with students engaged in silent reading.
The skill typically develops in early elementary school as children transition from sounding out words to recognizing them automatically.
