copula

Grammatical connecting word

A copula is a verb that links a subject to a complement rather than expressing action.

In English, forms of "be" are the primary copulas: The sky is blue, She seems tired, He became angry.

The complement describes or identifies the subject.

Grammarians also call these linking verbs.

In logic, the copula connects subject and predicate in propositions.
