classifiers

Things that categorize

Classifiers are words that categorize nouns by type or shape, required in some languages when counting: three flat things, two long things.

In English, measure words serve a similar function: a piece of paper, a head of cattle.

In machine learning, a classifier is an algorithm that sorts data into categories: The spam classifier flagged the email.

In linguistics, classifier languages like Chinese and Japanese require these counting words where English doesn't.
