kanji

Japanese borrowed characters

Kanji are the Chinese characters used in Japanese writing, alongside the phonetic hiragana and katakana scripts.

Each kanji represents a meaning rather than a sound, so the same character may have multiple pronunciations depending on context.

Japanese literacy requires learning roughly two thousand kanji: I'm still studying kanji for the proficiency test.
