katakana

Angular Japanese syllabary

Katakana is one of the two Japanese syllabaries, alongside hiragana.

Each symbol represents a syllable rather than a single sound.

Katakana is used primarily for foreign loanwords, onomatopoeia, scientific terms, and emphasis—similar to how English uses italics: The menu listed "koohii" (コーヒー) for coffee.
