coontail

Submerged pond weed

Coontail is an aquatic plant with feathery whorls of leaves resembling a raccoon's tail, common in ponds and lakes.

It floats freely without rooting, providing habitat for fish and invertebrates.

The name also applies to a hairstyle where hair is wrapped in alternating colors, spiraling like the striped tail: She wore her hair in coontails with black and pink wraps.
