consulship

Highest elected position

Consulship is the office or position of consul, or the period during which someone holds that office.

In ancient Rome, the consulship was the highest elected political office, held jointly by two consuls for one-year terms: Caesar held the consulship in 59 BC.

In modern usage, consulship refers to diplomatic posts representing one country's interests in another's cities.
