fasces

Rods around axe

Fasces is a bundle of rods bound around an axe, carried before ancient Roman magistrates as a symbol of authority and power to punish.

The rods represented beating, the axe beheading.

Mussolini adopted the fasces as the emblem of his movement, giving us the word fascism.

The image still appears on some official seals and architecture.
