compressional

Force reducing volume

Compressional describes forces, waves, or stresses that compress—push inward or squeeze together.

The term appears most often in geology and physics: compressional waves travel through rock by alternately compressing and expanding the material, compressional stress causes rock layers to buckle and fold.

The opposite is tensional, which pulls apart.
