nappe

Dam's flowing curtain

A nappe is a large sheet of rock that has been thrust over other formations, often traveling considerable distances during mountain-building events.

Geologists identify nappes in folded mountain ranges where older rock lies atop younger.

In a different sense, nappe describes the sheet of water flowing over a dam or weir: The nappe separated cleanly from the spillway crest.
