intarsia
Inlaid pattern technique
Intarsia is a decorative technique using inlaid pieces of wood, stone, or other materials to create patterns or images on a flat surface.
In woodworking, contrasting wood veneers are fitted together like a mosaic: an intarsia tabletop depicting a hunting scene.
The term also applies to a knitting technique that creates colorwork patterns by using separate yarn sections for each color block, rather than carrying yarn across the back.
