Dialogue shown visually

Closed captions are text versions of spoken dialogue and sound effects displayed on screen, primarily for deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers.

Unlike open captions, which are always visible, closed captions can be turned on or off by the viewer.

The term comes from television broadcast technology where captions were "closed" within the signal until decoded: Turn on closed captions so we can watch without waking the baby.
