captioning

Writing on-screen words

Captioning is the process of adding text to video or images, displaying spoken dialogue, sound effects, or descriptions on screen.

Closed captions can be toggled on or off; open captions are permanently embedded.

Captioning serves deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers, but also helps in noisy environments or when watching without sound: I always watch with captioning on at the gym.
