stenotype

Reporter's shorthand machine

A stenotype is a specialized keyboard machine used by court reporters and captioners to record speech at high speed.

Instead of typing individual letters, operators press multiple keys simultaneously to represent sounds, syllables, or entire words: The court reporter's stenotype captured every word of testimony.

The skill requires extensive training, and stenotype remains faster than conventional typing for verbatim transcription.
