superclass

Broader taxonomic rank

In object-oriented programming, a superclass is a class from which other classes inherit properties and methods.

The inheriting classes are called subclasses.

A superclass defines shared behavior that its subclasses can use or override: The Animal superclass contains methods that Dog and Cat inherit.

Also called a parent class or base class.
