cinder cones

Small eruption hills

Cinder cones are small, steep-sided volcanic hills formed when erupting lava fragments—cinders, ash, and rock—pile up around a vent.

They are the simplest and most common type of volcano, typically rising only a few hundred feet and often forming during a single eruptive episode.

Unlike larger shield volcanoes or stratovolcanoes, cinder cones have a distinctive conical shape with a bowl-shaped crater at the summit.
