lava fountain
Erupting molten spray
A lava fountain is a jet of molten rock ejected from a volcanic vent, propelled by expanding gases.
These incandescent plumes can reach hundreds of meters high during eruptions: The lava fountain lit up the night sky.
Unlike explosive eruptions that produce ash, lava fountains are characteristic of effusive volcanism, particularly at Hawaiian-style shield volcanoes.
