chlorofluorocarbon

Refrigerant chemical compound

A chlorofluorocarbon is a synthetic compound containing carbon, chlorine, and fluorine atoms.

These chemicals were widely used as refrigerants, propellants, and solvents until scientists discovered they deplete the ozone layer.

International agreements have largely phased them out.

Often abbreviated CFC: The Montreal Protocol banned CFCs in aerosol sprays.
