chlorocarbons

Halogenated organic compounds

Chlorocarbons are organic compounds containing carbon and chlorine atoms, often with hydrogen as well.

These synthetic chemicals include substances like carbon tetrachloride and chloroform, widely used as solvents, refrigerants, and in manufacturing.

Many chlorocarbons, particularly chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), became notorious for depleting the ozone layer and are now heavily regulated or banned under international agreements.

The phase-out of chlorocarbons in aerosols began in the 1980s.
