refrigerant
Heat-absorbing substance
A refrigerant is a substance used in cooling systems—air conditioners, refrigerators, heat pumps—that absorbs heat as it evaporates and releases heat as it condenses.
The term usually refers to chemical compounds like Freon or newer hydrofluorocarbons designed for this purpose.
As an adjective, refrigerant describes something that produces cooling: refrigerant gases, refrigerant properties.
