freon

Banned cooling gas

Freon is a general term for various chlorofluorocarbon and hydrochlorofluorocarbon compounds used as refrigerants and aerosol propellants.

Once ubiquitous in air conditioners, refrigerators, and spray cans, these chemicals were phased out after scientists discovered they depleted the ozone layer: The mechanic said the old car's AC still used freon.

The word often appears generically for any refrigerant, though technically it was a brand name. (Capitalized Freon is the trademark.)
