chloroethane
Volatile organic compound
Chloroethane is a colorless, flammable gas used as a refrigerant, solvent, and local anesthetic.
In medicine, it's sprayed on skin to produce rapid cooling and temporary numbness before minor procedures: The doctor applied chloroethane before removing the splinter.
Also called ethyl chloride.
