chloroform
Old surgical sedative
Chloroform is a colorless liquid with a sweet smell, once widely used as an anesthetic.
It became notorious as a tool for incapacitating people—the cliché of a rag soaked in chloroform pressed over someone's face persists in fiction, though it works far slower than movies suggest.
As a verb, to chloroform someone is to render them unconscious with the substance: The kidnapper chloroformed his victim.
