Freon
Ozone-depleting chemical
Freon is a trademarked name for a family of refrigerant chemicals developed by DuPont in the 1930s.
Though the trademark remains active, the word has become largely generic in casual speech, referring to any refrigerant regardless of manufacturer: We need to recharge the Freon in the AC unit. (Lowercase freon is the generic term for such refrigerants.)
