chinook wind

Warm mountain breeze

A chinook wind is a warm, dry wind that descends the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains, capable of raising temperatures dramatically in winter—sometimes by 20°C in hours.

The rapid warming can melt snow quickly, earning it the nickname "snow eater." A chinook wind swept through Calgary overnight, turning ice to slush.
