foehn

Warm mountain wind

A foehn is a warm, dry wind that descends the lee side of a mountain range.

As air rises over mountains it cools and drops its moisture; descending the other side, it compresses and warms rapidly.

The foehn is named for the Alps, where it's famous for melting snow and triggering avalanches, but similar winds occur worldwide: the chinook in the Rockies, the Santa Ana in Southern California.
