game cartridge
Console media format
A game cartridge is a plastic case containing a circuit board with video game software, designed to slot into a console.
Cartridges dominated home gaming from the 1970s through the 1990s before optical discs largely replaced them, though handheld systems like the Nintendo Switch still use them.
The ritual of blowing into a cartridge to fix glitches—whether effective or not—remains part of gaming nostalgia.
