superinfection

Infection during infection

Superinfection is a second infection that occurs during treatment for an existing one, typically when antibiotics kill beneficial bacteria and allow resistant organisms to flourish.

The term also applies in virology when a cell already infected by one virus becomes infected by a different strain: The patient developed a superinfection with a drug-resistant strain.

The super- prefix indicates one infection layered atop another, not superiority.
