catechisms

Religious instruction manuals

Catechisms are summaries of religious doctrine in question-and-answer format, used for instruction.

The form originated in Christian education, teaching fundamental beliefs through memorized responses: The children recited their catechisms.

By extension, any rote series of questions and answers on a subject: the catechism of party loyalty.

The singular catechism refers to both the document and the practice of learning it.
