backcast
Rod's backward sweep
Backcast is a fly-fishing term for the motion of sweeping the rod backward to extend the line behind the angler before the forward cast: His backcast caught a branch overhead.
In planning and forecasting, to backcast is to work backward from a desired future outcome to determine what steps would be needed to reach it—the reverse of forecasting.
