close captioning
Dialogue displayed visually
Close captioning is the display of text on a screen representing spoken dialogue, sound effects, and other audio content in video programming.
Originally developed for deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers, it's now widely used in noisy environments, for language learning, or when watching with the sound off.
The "closed" distinguishes it from open captions—closed captions can be turned on or off by the viewer, while open captions are permanently visible.
Turn on the close captioning so we don't wake the baby.
