canons

Bodies of doctrine

Canons are established rules, principles, or standards—especially authoritative lists of works or texts.

The biblical canon comprises books accepted as scripture; the literary canon includes works deemed essential to a tradition: Shakespeare is central to the Western canon.

Canon law governs church affairs.

A canon is also a member of certain Christian clergy, or a type of musical composition where voices enter successively with the same melody.

A different word, cannon, is the large gun.
