culverins

Renaissance siege weapons

Culverins were long-barreled cannons used from the 15th through 17th centuries, valued for their range and accuracy compared to shorter artillery pieces.

The term also applied to early handheld firearms.

Culverins fired relatively small projectiles over long distances, making them useful in naval warfare and sieges: The ship's culverins opened fire from beyond the enemy's range.
