bursa
Friction-reducing pouch
A bursa is a small fluid-filled sac that cushions areas where bones, tendons, and muscles meet—typically near joints.
These sacs reduce friction during movement.
When a bursa becomes inflamed, the condition is called bursitis: The doctor diagnosed bursitis in her shoulder.
Plural: bursae or bursas.
