underlayer

Base beneath surface

An underlayer is a layer beneath another layer—foundation material covered by something else.

In hair coloring, the underlayer is hair closest to the scalp, often dyed a contrasting color that peeks through: She has blonde on top with a dark underlayer.

In clothing, an underlayer sits against the skin beneath outer garments.
