substratum
Base beneath everything
Substratum is a layer lying beneath another—the foundation or underlying material on which something rests.
In geology, it's the rock or soil beneath the surface layer.
More abstractly, it describes an underlying basis or foundation: a substratum of truth beneath the exaggerations, the cultural substratum of a society.
In linguistics, a substratum is a language that influences another language imposed upon it.
Plural: substrata or substratums.
